AIDS Prevention

Every 12 seconds a person is newly infected with HIV...

Over 33 million people world-wide are either infected with the HI-virus or suffering from the disease itself - AIDS. Every day approx. 7,000 people world-wide are infected with HIV. This means that every 12 seconds a person is newly infected with the HIV-Virus. In Germany alone a total of 2,750 new HIV-infections were diagnosed in 2007. Given these statistics AIDS prevention remains a serious issue – in Germany, Europe and around the globe.

What does HIV and AIDS actually mean? How is the virus transmitted exactly? And how can one protect him/herself from infection? Comprehensive information about the topic of HIV and AIDS can be found on the campaign websites “Don’t Give AIDS a Chance” and “Join In“.

Don’t Give AIDS a Chance

“Tiiiiinaa...what do these condoms cost?” – it was with this probing question taken from the social advertisement video clip entitled “Supermarket” that the campaign “Don’t Give AIDS a Chance!” made its mark throughout Germany and became one of the most successful calling cards of the AIDS prevention umbrella campaign “Don’t Give AIDS a Chance!” This campaign was initiated by the German Federal Centre for Health Education in 1987. The over 90 attention-grabbing social advertisements and the eye-catching posters from the “Join In” campaign contributed significantly to the transformation of preventative awareness and to a more open interaction in dealing with the topics of HIV/AIDS and safer sex in Germany.
